A strong and vibrant library system is one of the cornerstones of a thriving and connected community. Brampton Library creates opportunities for everyone to discover their full potential by fostering literacy, inspiring learning and building community. Board members are local residents who share a commitment to positive growth.
The Ontario Public Libraries Act is the key piece of legislation governing Ontario's public libraries. It supports providing equal and universal access to information, and establishes free public library services in Ontario through governance and regulations.
Under the authority of the Public Libraries Act, R.S.O 1990, Chapter P.44, Public Library Boards are governing boards, similar to legal corporations, comprised of community members with the authority to establish policy as well as to govern the library's affairs under the authority. A public library board’s five primary functions are:
- To advocate for the library in the community and to advocate for the community as a member of the library board.
- To plan for the future of the library through a Strategic Plan and Facilities Master Plan.
- To monitor and evaluate the overall effectiveness of the library including financial and fiduciary responsibilities.
- To establish and review library policies.
- To hire and evaluate the Chief Executive Officer.
Brampton Public Library Board members are appointed by Brampton City Council for a four-year term, concurrent with the term of the elected City Council. In an approved Council resolution (#377-2014), dated December 17, 2014, the Brampton Public Library Board is comprised of two (2) representatives from City council and eight (8) Brampton citizens.
